Metaldeza has been chosen by the UBB UTE to carry out the Gloucester Waste Plant. The UTE is an international leader in the environmental sector. It operates in more than 200 waste management facilities, including eight waste energy facilities. It processes around seven million tons of waste every year. It serves more than 50 million people around the world and has 35,000 employees.
The new contract involves running a Solid Waste Plant. The project has a budget amounting to 8.5 million euros. The plant will be located in Gloucester, a capital city of the county of Gloucestershire. Located in the southwest of the country, near the River Sevem and the border with Wales. The buildings constructed will occupy an area of approximately 9,200 square meters, for which 2,500 tons of steel will be used.
Metaldeza Experience
The construction of the new Gloucestershire plant is underway. To achieve this project, the UTE took into account the great experience of Metaldeza in this type of projects. These works require expert engineering and specialized construction management.
In 2015 we were chosen by the prestigious firm VINCI Environnement for the execution of a similar project, a solid waste incineration plant in the Yorkshire county, in the city of York.
The Solid Waste Plant
This type of facilities by their nature are quite large buildings. We sought to minimize the visual impact of the installation through the use of efficient design techniques and the use of carefully selected building materials.
We carry out the calculation and detailed engineering using finite elements with the most advanced sowfware in the market.
The installation has been designed to be compatible with the surrounding environment, and as such incorporates stepped descending roof sections. The highest point of the installation will be the one closest to the M5 motorway, where the roof will have a peak of 48.5 meters in height. At its widest point, the building will be 55 meters, and the entire installation is 236 meters long. The chimney behind the installation facing the M5 motorway will be 70 meters.
The installation will create around 300 jobs and around 40 jobs when it is operational. It will include a visitor center and an educational classroom for use by schools and community groups.
It is expected that the construction of the facility will last around 33 months. It is expected to be fully operational by July 2019.
Recycle 70%
Currently, more than half of residents’ household waste is sent to a landfill that cost more than 10 million pounds sterling in taxes last year. The goal of Gloucestershire is to recycle 70% of its household waste in 2030 and the remaining 30% is treated at the Energy from Waste plant. The facility will generate around 14.5 MW of clean electricity for export, which is enough to feed 25,000 households.
